Book Review—THINK, ACT, BELIEVE LIKE JESUS by Randy Frazee with Robert Noland

Hi Y'all!

I like to do my Book Reviews in a different manner. I review it and take notes while reading it, as I don't retain for a long period of time. By doing it this way, I can actually help you feel as you are reading it with me and benefiting from it as well.

This is an excellent book. This author makes it an interesting read, as well as an intellectual tool. For example, he reminded me that there is a difference in “knowing what God's Word says, and BELIEVING it. To be a real Christian we MUST BELIEVE it.

I was sent this book titled Think, Act, Believe like Jesus, becoming a new person in Christ by Randy Frazee from Harpercollins Christian Publishing.for the purpose of reviewing it. My honest opinion is offered and given for no monetary compensation. Just the wonderful copy of this book 

To continue with my review, this book makes you REALLY THINK and search yourself as to “I say I'm a Christian, what is the evidence”? We are created in God's image, but do I ACT the way Jesus did when he was physically on this earth? Do I Think the way Jesus did then and does now?, To do this, and be an authentic Christian, I would have to BELIEVE the way He does. The Actual Title of this book is Think, Act Believe Like Jesus. In other words we are to actually Think like He does, Act like He does and BE like He is. Yes, Jesus is the only perfect being, so we cannot totally BE like Him, although God's Word says “Be ye perfect, as I am perfect”. We are to STRIVE to be the way He is.

I may not agree with everything this author says, as we have doctrinal differences, but I do know that I am learning A Lot from this book. Practical ideas, and general knowledge as well as a wonderful insight to help me continue my “self searching” is helping me.

This book is broken down into Parts such as “Think like Jesus” What do I Believe?” Part two; Act Like Jesus “What Should I do?”, Part 3 ; Be Like Jesus, “who Am I becoming? Part 4; Transformation; The Think, Act, Be Revolution and Becoming a New Person in Christ.

It even takes it a step further and has an Appendix which covers Taking it To the Next Level”.

As I said, I am writing this as I am reading, so you will get the full idea of what this author is trying to convey to us.

I am enjoying this book completely. I look forward to seeing and reaping the benefits of putting this book to work in my life and becoming a better Christian as well as creating a closer relationship with Jesus.

It reminds me, yes, I said I receive Jesus as my Savior, but how serious am I? Just as Colossians 2:6-8 says, “Just as your received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as your were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

This shook me to my bones. I love to say I'm a Christian. I am Not afraid of the Gospel of Christ, but how do I show it? Do I walk the walk and talk the talk? Would God look at me and say “well done thy good and faithful servant at this point?

I think I need to check myself, and re-evaluate myself.

This is what this book has done for me. It is not only someone's views, or help because of personal stories and events, but he actually helps us to put this book to work and apply these strategies of helping us to become better Christians in our hearts as well as our minds. He helps me to realize that ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

I recommend this book highly for anyone who finds themselves wondering if there is more to being a Christian than lip service, knowing scriptures, and good deeds. There is so much more.

Read this book! I guarantee you will consider it a blessing!

The Meaning behind the "The Twelve Days of Christmas"

Several years ago,  my sister sent me an e-mail that I thought was very interesting. I don't know how many if any of you have ever seen this or already knew it, but I thought it was interesting enough to pass along, just in case. A bit of trivia if you will, or some of that useless information that we often collect in our memories to bring back up at such a time as needed to preoccupy our minds, or maybe it might be asked on a "game show" or contest that you enter. Anyway, here goes:

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me.
What in the world do leaping lords, French hens,
swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out

of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

This week, I found out.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were
not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone
during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.

It has two levels of meaning:
The surface meaning
plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality
which the children could remember.


The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.










The five golden rings are called the The five golden Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for
 the six days of creation.








Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.







The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.









Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.






The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.








The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.








The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.






                                                                                                                       
So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on if you wish.'

Book Review "CLOSER THAN CLOSE" by Dave Hickman

Good Evening to All!

This is my first book review in a while.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did the book.

Excerpt to think about:  "But what if being "close" to you isn't good enough for Jesus?  What if he wants to be closer than close?  Instead of simply having a "personal relationship" with you, what if Jesus longs to be "perfectly one" with you instead?

"Closer Than Close" written  by Dave Hickman and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc is wonderfully written and easy to understand. I was sent this book as a Complimentary copy for my review by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. The opinions are strictly mine and I was compensated nothing other than this book for them.

Sometimes it seems as if Christianity over-promises and under-delivers. A relationship with Jesus sounds great, but what does it mean? Disappointment and anxiety settle in as we strive to draw close to a God who often seems out of reach.

Dave Hickman was chasing that elusive God until he stumbled upon a foundational truth that often goes overlooked. God isn't looking for a relationship with us in the way we usually think of relationships. God takes up residence in us, inviting us to die to ourselves and become a new creation in him. Where we imagine a relationship between two individuals, God invites us into something infinitely more intimate: union with Christ.

I do want to say first and foremost that while I have doctrinal beliefs that do not align with everything Mr. Hickman is saying, I totally agree with the idea of his book and I have enjoyed his writing. I like the way he includes so many scriptures that I can go to my Bible and research which begins a long thought process. This to me is a sign of a well-written book.

I am not one who can retain easily, yet this book I was able to, and it kept my interest.

My own thought is not that He that is unapproachable and unattainable, but we ourselves put limits on Him. We keep Him at a distance because we want to live by our own standards rather than by what He expects of us. We limit Him, rather than thinking in terms of He being our Creator and bigger than any problem that we can imagine, therefore able to help us under any circumstance. We say to ourselves well, God could help me, but I can really handle this myself, I don't really need God's help. He's too busy for me, this problem isn't important enough for Him to get involved. WRONG. Mr. Hickman is saying God wants to be part of us part of everything about us. How we live, what we do, how we act.

What I understood him to say is that people are beginning to feel that there is no hope. That God is floating around out there not caring. We hear the phrase “He wants a relationship with us” all the time, but The author is helping us to understand that God wants us to be “closer” than parent and child. He wants us to be intertwined. By in-dwelling in us He wants to be part of us. After all, we are created in His Image. What better compliment can we give our Creator than to allow Him to live and dwell within us and be part of our being?

While I sing the praises of this book for how it was written, I had some reservations about it as well. He speaks of several different “unions”. The first being “in the beginning” Prehistory to Genesis 2 (Adam and Eve). This makes sense if you forget about “in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God. If we study, we find that “the Word” or Plan was Jesus.

This tells me that the first union was God with Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. This was His plan all along. He knew there would be no perfect human to use as a sacrificial lamb for our sins, after all, He made us. Of course then we have to get into Jesus coming to earth as a man, and being crucified as our sacrifice for our sins, but of course that is another story.

Anyway, while reading this book I have really begun to do research so that is a good thing. Even if I may not agree with his way of looking at things as a Trinitarian would, because I am not Trinitarian, but it is a very well thought out book and I would definitely recommend it for those who are, and for those who like do research and do what the Bible tells them to do and prove His Word. I find that the way I do it best is work my way backward. Read something I don't agree with and go back to my Bible to make sure what I am thinking is correct. That may sound silly to some, but it works for me. I learn a lot that way.

I also like the fact that it has questions at the end of each chapter so that you can ponder and study which I like also.

This book is a book, I believe that can be enjoyed by readers from teenage years and up. It is not written so that you have to be a scholar to understand the words (which I have encountered before), and the ideas and thought process are easily understood.

Good Evening to All!

First let me say that the answers to last night's Bible Drill are below. I enjoy doing these because I hope that by doing these, people might gain some knowledge of
God's Word and will get to know Him a little better.

Too many people have the idea that all it takes to get to heaven is to be “a good person” and “say they love Jesus”.

If they would stop and reason it out, they would realize that it takes more. Jesus wants to have a personal and up close relationship with us. He tells us this in His Word.

To love someone in an up close way, people have to get to know one another. The only way we can get to know God is through His Word and prayer. He tells us to “hide His Word in our heart.” We cannot do this if we don't read it, or just skim over it. We have to study it, and learn it. It is my hope that my “reading family” or followers if you prefer, will get something from the Bible Drills, Trivia Questions, and Quizzes that I will being providing.

When I started my blog, it was for the purpose of getting God's Word out to as many people as possible. I did strictly Devotionals for a while, but decided that there might be others like me that could learn more by little quizzes and such. I find it hard to retain a lot of information at one time by just reading, but quizzes and such seem to help me get past that.

Now, for the "meat" of this post.

There are many books in the Bible that I favor. Proverbs, because of its lessons, but I took another look at 1 Thessalonians. It concerns itself with the "return of Christ" and what we should do to make ourselves ready to meet Him up in the air.   

At this date and time, I think we should all take heed to what this book, along with other books in the Bible such as Proverbs say because they are excellent teachings that if followed will enable us to join our Savior in the heavens.

It teaches guidelines for growing in Godliness.  Godly believers live unto God and for God.  They seek to honor and reflect God in everything they think, say, or do.  Godliness lives quietly, is absorbed in doing good for others and works productively.  Godliness has a good reputation with unbelievers, and last but not least, Godliness is knowing the commands of Scripture and doing them

• Understand that successful Christian living consists of 1) work that flows from faith, 2) labor that flows from love, and 3) patient endurance that is born of living hope.  Insure that your life is characterized in this manner.  (1:3)
• Be faithful to intercede for other believers and other congregations.  (3:10)
• Live your life in order to please God, not yourself (for if you truly have the Holy Ghost within you, your desires will change to be what God wants as well).  my emphesis  (4:1)
• Live a quiet , peaceful life,  Never gossip.  Be diligent in whatever work you have chosen to do.  Earn a good reputation with unbelievers.  (411-12)
• Conduct your life, being alert and self-controlled.  (5:6)
• Practice the commands of Scripture.   (5:16-22)

It has Key Lessons in Faith--The person of faith prays that God will demonstrate His power in the church today.  Faith is able to receive God's Word through human beings, believing God's ability to use human vessels, and faith looks forward to the promise that the Lord will appear a second time for salvation's consummation.

• Pray that your preaching of the gospel will be attended by the power of signs, wonders, and miracles.  (1:5)
• Receive the preaching and teaching as God's Word!  Refuse to receive the Scripture as merely human opinion, and avoid negating its authority or nullifying its effectiveness for growth in your life.  (2:13)
• Encourage brothers and sisters in Christ often, giving hope through expecting Jesus Christ's return.  (4:17)

1 Thessalonians also has Lessons for Leaders.  Although righteous spiritual leaders speak the truth of God boldly, they do so gently.  The are unmoved by flattery or praise from humankind.  They only seek praise from God.  They are diligent workers who never take advantage of those they serve.

• Leaders, seek to please God, rather than cater to humans.  Never employ flattery; rather speak the truth forthrightly.  Look only to God for praise.  (2:5-6)
• Leaders, practice gentleness in your ministry.  (2:7)
• Leaders, understand that ministry means hard work and long hours.  (2:9)

It tells us the Keys to Moral Purity.  The church must sustain a biblical commitment to sexual purity.  The worldly attitude that produces sexually immoral behavior rejects God and His ways.

• Recognize that sanctification includes sexual purity and moral self-control.  Never defraud others; that is, do not cheat brothers through wrongful sexual liaisons.  (4:3-6)
• Understand that living in sexual impurity is a rejection of God as well as His Word.  (4:7-8)

Last but not least, I has the Keys to Relating to Authority--Pastoral leadership is a gift from God.  We must treat God's appointed leaders and teachers with appropriate respect. 

• Honor church leadership.  Recognize that their Bible-based instruction comes with Jesus' own authority.   (5:23)

"FACING THE GIANTS" and Trivia Answers

Good Evening to All!

What are "giants" in our lives you may ask.  Giants are problems or situations that we fear, or have
trouble overcoming in our lives.  How do we deal with them?  We turn them over to God.  That's what we do.  He is bigger than any problem or situation which we may encounter.  He does not say in His Word that He will keep us from having to face them, or deal with them, only that He will be there to help us.  Running from our problems is not the answer.  David did not run from the giant Goliath.  He knew that God was with Him, just as He is with us.  As long as we have faith that God will see us through our troubles we will be overcomers.

• Truth--Put on the belt of truth.  God is truth and no deception abides with His will.
• Righteousness--Put on the breastplate of righteousness.  As we repent of our sins, Jesus forgives us.  Only through Him can we live a righteous life.
• Peace--Put on the shoes of the gospel of peace.  As we study God's Word and seek His will for our lives, He gives a peace beyond description.  In turn, we can learn to carry that same peace to others.
• Salvation--Put on the helmet of salvation.  According to God's Word if you will ask His forgiveness for your sins and repent by turning away from sinful ways, you can know for sure with your heart and mind that you can count on God's salvation.  By repenting, you are turning your life around and living FOR Him.  This is the true way to journey toward Salvation. and being saved.  I cannot in all good conscience say Once saved always saved, or that being saved is an "event".  It is a lifestyle.  Being saved is a lifetime journey.  That is why even the Apostle Paul said "I die daily".  He knew that it was and still is a lifetime journey.  God said "be ye holy as I am holy.  In other words we must STRIVE for perfection (or completeness) which is a journey.  We must be diligent not to let the devil creep in with his subtle ways.  That is how he gets people.  A tiny bit at a time.  That way, they don't realize what is happening before it is too late and he has them sucked into sin again.  Be watchful.

• Faith--Put on the shield of faith.   Because of His promises to us, because He first loved us, and we belong to Him, we can relax and know that He has our backs.  We can know that He will be there to help us through anything, as long as we listen to Him.  All we have to do is ASK HIM.  This is where so many people mess up.  They don't understand that He expects us to ask for His help.  He will not intrude.  He does not force His way into our lives.  He wants to be invited.  Therefore if we need His help, even though He already knows what we need, He wants to be asked.  We have not because we ask not.  That is what He tells us directly.

• God's Word--Put on the sword of the spirit.  God's Word--your Bible.  Read it often.  Carry it in your car, your briefcase, backpack, purse anywhere that it can be handy to pull out and call on God for strength and direction.  Keep it especially in your heart. If we read it often, it will seep into our hearts and we will be able to recall scriptures as we need them.

When we put on the full armor of God and obey Him, then we can stand back and watch our giants fall, and declare what a WONDERFUL GOD WE HAVE.
